The church was founded in 1367 as a chapel and was referred to as parochiekerk in 1395, named after Saint Lambert.
Utrechtse bisschop Frederik van Blankenheim granted permission for the faithful of Buren to form their own parish in the Lambertuskerk.
- The church underwent expansion with side chapels and a new main choir in the 15th century, gaining its current shape.
- The tower features a Renaissance-style upper structure built by Alessandro Pasqualini and Pieter Post.
The church was restored from 1973 to 1980. The church tower was restored again in 1990.
