Igreja de São Domingos
Rodovia da Amizade - Vereador Renato Timm Marins
History
The Igreja de São Domingos, located in Lisbon, Portugal, has a rich and complex history spanning over eight centuries.
- Dedicated in 1241, it was once the largest church in Lisbon and played a significant role in the city's royal weddings prior to the establishment of the modern Portuguese republic in 1910.
- The church was also infamous for its association with the Inquisition, where Jesuit missionary Gabriel Malagrida was executed in 1761 after being accused of treason.
- The church square was the site of the Lisbon massacre in 1506, where thousands of New Christians (previously converted Jews) were murdered by a Christian mob.
The church suffered significant damage from earthquakes in 1531 and 1755, with rebuilding efforts not completed until 1807.
A devastating fire broke out in 1959, killing two firefighters and destroying many important paintings and statues.
The church reopened in 1994 after a restoration process that left many signs of the fire intact.
